Network Rail is the UK's biggest consumer of electricity. In this story we outline the journey so far.

Network Rail, the UK's largest purchaser of electricity, has embraced renewable energy and solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) as part of its commitment to support the government's goal of achieving "Net Zero by 2050."

David notes, "With a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Network Rail aims to fully decarbonize its non-traction electricity by 2030 and reduce the carbon footprint of its traction power consumption by 78% by 2035."

As the owner of extensive land and proprietary distribution systems, the company recognizes the opportunities in the renewables sector. Their cables transmit power from the grid to urban areas, and they are exploring ways to maximize the use of their assets. The company is also considering behind-the-meter solar projects, which enable consumption close to the generation source.

While Network Rail acknowledges the challenges of working in the solar sector, such as ensuring additionality and complying with procurement rules, they are committed to finding solutions.

The multidisciplinary PPA teams consist of experts in procurement, finance, legal, technical, and project management, facilitating efficient operations. This team was created by LaTorche lead, David, and has already brought the largest public sector PPA to market.

But the programme is not just to power trian. David reports that Network Rail recognizes the potential for rooftop solar installations on their stations, depots, and warehouses, but safety considerations must be resolved before implementation.

In conclusion, Network Rail's involvement in renewable energy, including solar PPAs, demonstrates their dedication to achieving sustainability goals and supporting the transition to a greener future.
